Ok, this problem deserves a tutorial of its own, it appears. I'm not a guru so I won't explain terms as "resolution", we'll just accept them as a given :]
also, if you find any inaccuracies I'll gladly accept corrections. In no way do I claim to be a know-it-all.

Why does my text suddenly appear very small/very large and how can I fix it?
skip directly to solution
Most of the cases the problem resides in the image's resolution.
Computer graphics (meant to be exposed only on the Internet) do not need to have a high resolution, as monitors will display at 72 pixels/inch anyway, so you've probably worked with this resolution without even worrying about it, until you've found a pic that is, say, at 300 pixels/inch, or 1 px/inch.
the problem
Suddenly the font you knew so well displays horribly stretched, or you have to get it to gigantic sizes to make it show up; you may think it doesn't appear at all if the image's resolution is too big.

don't panic!

Just change the resolution: Image -> Image Size
a) un-check Resample Image; this way it won't modify the displayed image size; you'll notice, maybe, that it changes the "Document size" - if you were to print it; I never print my icons, so...
b) put 72 pixels/inch for Resolution
like this:

About text measuring in points vs. pixels: I've only worked with points; if for some reason you want to switch to another measurement unit:
Edit -> Preferences -> Units and Rulers
Type: a drop-down menu where you can choose between points, pixels and millimeters.

If you have any questions regarding this problem, reply to this entry and I'll try my best.

Ah, good deal. I've seen this problem around these places a lot lately. I had no clue what caused it. Of course, with PSP, resolution doesn't change on New Images like PS does, (grr) so I never had a problem with it until I went into my PS. (grr some more)

Don't suppose you know how to keep the size and resolution of New Images from changing every stinking time you open a new one?

hm, every time I make a New one (new PS document, that is) it memorizes the last settings; if they're left at 100x100 @ 72px/inch, this is what they'll usually appear;
but when making icons I usually open the original image, rather than creating a new doc, so it has whatever resolution it was made/saved at.

It changes every single time for me. When I make icons I open a New Image first, then the picture and crop it out, copy, and close the original then paste it onto the New Image. I have to put in the values every time. It's very annoying.

hm, yeah, I tested this in the exact order that you specified, and while the first new image remained correctly as 72px/", the second new image opened as 96px/", which was the picture's res; annoying indeed, and possibly not intended behaviour; I don't know what to do about it except for keep trying :(

how do I do that when I want to make it 100x100 even? its still giving me some problems
Jul. 26th, 2005 03:34 pm (UTC)
when you go to change your resolution to 72, either make sure to not have the resample image deselected, or after making it 72 px/in, set it back to a 100 by 100 square, the icon will look totally the same. Now, go back to your text, select it, and you'll see that your font size has reduced immensly, now you can change the size of it to a larger size. Hope that works.

Thank you so much! I've had problems with tiny font. I go to type something and it will only show up if I put the font size to something crazy like 800 pt and it would still barely show up. This solution totally solved my problem!

Okay, my resolution is already 72, but the font is still huge, and it's set at 0.1 pt!

Apr. 13th, 2010 08:21 am (UTC)
I've already set both the image and canvas resolution to 72, but I'm still having the same issues. Any ideas? I'm desperate... :-s
Jun. 3rd, 2010 08:07 pm (UTC)
I'm also having the same issue. I don't suppose you got to the bottom of it, did you?
Jun. 3rd, 2010 08:16 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah! After a while I discovered I had the vertically and horizontally scales set to 200% or something like that. When I set them back to 100%, the problem got solved.
Jun. 3rd, 2010 08:23 pm (UTC)
Brilliant! I've just fixed mine as well. Thank you.
Jun. 3rd, 2010 08:26 pm (UTC)
No problem. Glad it worked! :)
Aug. 22nd, 2010 09:20 pm (UTC)
The solution in the above tutorial isn't working for me either.

Would anyone be so kind as to point me in the direction of another solution or tell me HOW to change the vertical and horiztonal scales?
