✄ TUTORIAL NO.1

My first tutorial (out of two) after our lovely viewers voted. I'm very fond of this colouring, so please, love it tenderly. LIKE A WOMAAAAN

what you'll need for this tutorial;
→ Basic/Intermediate knowledge of Photoshop language.
→ Photoshop (any kind I guess) sorry PSP users.
→ A MQ or HQ image. Trust me, it looks much better.
→ Time & Patience. There are a few layers to be fiddled with.
→ Music. It's good for the soul.

Right. Let's get going.

One → Crop or cut your base down to the desired size. I've used the standard 100x100 pixel.

Two → Let's play with levels! Open up a new levels layer [layer→new adjustment layer→levels] and enter these figures into the input levels.

RBG → 15 → 1.00 → 232
RED → 12 → 1.00 → 247
GREEN → 9 → 1.00 → 245
BLUE → 8 → 1.00 → 240

This is my result. What I aimed for is a brighter image and to bring out the natural tones. Yes, this can be done with screen or brightness/contrast, but I think the levels layer gives you more control over the amount of colour increased.

PLEASE NOTE → All images are different. These input levels may not work with your image, adjust accordingly.

Three → Now for a Selective Colour layer. Open one up [layer→new adjustment layer→selective color] and enter these figures.

RED → -100 → +60 → +100 → 0
YELLOW → -100 → +62 → +100 → 0
WHITES → -90 → -21 → -55 → 0
NEUTRALS → -10 → -19 → -26 → 0

Now, you should have this. Sure, it looks fine now, but if we left it this way, later there would be disaster as I found out when creating this. So, now click on this layer and set it to COLOR and the Opacity to aprox.50%.

Here's mine. It's not much now, but just you wait.

Four → Time for another Selective Colour layer. Open a new SC layer up and enter in these figures.

RED → -55 → +9 → +21→ -7
YELLOW → +100 → +11→ +14 → +7
GREENS → +100 → -100 → +100 → +57
CYANS → +34 → -66 → +100 → -28
BLUES → +100 → -100 → -85 → +33
NEUTRALS → -25 → +9 → +3 → +11

Leave the layer as is.

Ooh. It's coming together now. Here is mine currently.

Five → Let's get that blue pumping. I s'pose this layer COULD be skipped if it makes your image just too blue. It's up to you, just experiment. Right, open ANOTHER Selective Color layer and enter these digits.

RED → -55 → +9 → +21→ -7
YELLOW → +100 → +11→ +14 → +7
GREENS → +100 → -100 → +100 → +57
CYANS → +93 → -53 → -100 → +55
BLUES → +100 → +23 → -100 → +38
NEUTRALS → -1 → 0 → -9 → +1

Alright, so it's just the layer above it duplicated and fiddled with. xD Wanna see mine?

Six → Let's move on from Selective Colours and open our eyes to the wonders of Colour Balance layers. Open up a new Colour Balance layer [layer→new adjustment layer→color balance] and enter these digits.

MIDTONES → -17 → +11 → +20
SHADOWS → -15→ +10→ +16
HIGHLIGHTS → +8 → -17 → -7

Here is mine now. So close Grimmkitty!

Seven → Now slap on a new Hue/Saturation layer [layer→new adjustment layer→hue/saturation] and boost up the MASTER SATURATION by +10.

Hello handsome!

Eight → This is an added feature, just to kick up the colour again. Go down to the background image and select it. Then go to [image→ adjustments →hue/saturation] or key in ctrl + U. Boost the MASTER SATURATION up again by +10.

AND WE ARE FINISHED.

Here is my final product.

A damn sight better then the original, if I can say so.

Here are some more examples of the colouring being used.

Now go forth and add textures or text or whathaveyou!

I have to say there will be NO .PSD given for this tutorial. Why? Because although I sometimes ask for them, I think, especially for this tutorial, it's important to fiddle with your image. Please do take the time to do this. It happens to often that people just slap on a .PSD and go, and some images don't cope with the colouring. For example, this colouring wouldn't work on an image with a lot of blue already vibrant. Just take the time to experiment.

Any questions? Please don't hestitate to ask!
