Hey, I'm really confused on how you use the gradients. Most of the times that I try to use them, it totally covers up the picture. The best I've ever been able to do is the blue and purple one that I used on my current icon, but that's still heavier than I want. And most of the time when I try to use one it totally covers the pic to where all you see is just the gradient. So I'm wondering if anyone can teach me how to use them, cause I really don't think it's supposed to go like this.

Oh, I guess it would help to tell what program I use. I use Paint Shop Pro 8. Thanks in advance!!!

You have to play with the blend modes and the opacity. Change the mode to color or hue or screen or multiply or color burn or any other mode and mess with the percentage opacity as well.

ok, about all that you said that I know how to do with the gradients is change the opacity percent. How do I change the blend mode?

Yeah, I'm a total newbie at this all. =D

I don't use PSP, so I don't know how you would do it. However, here is a link to all the PSP tutorials in this community. There are some there on blend modes.

I do not have PSP, so I am not quite sure how to change the blend modes. I rarely change blend modes, myself, but usually just screw around with the opacity of the gradient. I get some pretty good results with opacity between fifteen and thirty-five.

You can change the layer blend mode by clicking on the layer you want to change in the layer palette (you'll have to open it from the view menu if you don't have it showing already). It should come up with a drop-down menu with options such as Lighten, Darken, Screen etc. Just experiment with different blend modes until you find something you like.

Press F8 to get the layer palette up. next to opacity is the blend mode... I find soft light and hard light good ones.
Also if you right click on the layer's name and then select 'properties' then you should be able to change it there too.
I hope that helps.

Changing the blend mode... (sorry if the image is too large)

Remember to play with the blend mode on the layer you have your gradient on, not your actual image (which is what I did in the first few days I had PSP8 -__-). I can't really recommend specific modes, because it depends on what effect you want. In my current icon, I used a lot of overlay and dodging to get the bright coppery effect. Just try different kinds until you get the effect you want, I guess. Experimenting with blending colors and gradients is fun. ^^;
