Coloring question - issues with contrast

How do you achieve the rich and vibrant colors that people are using for their graphics on tumblr (examples under the cut)?
I tried different color layers on Color Burn and Overlay, but they only change the screencap's own colors and don't saturate the screencaps the way I want to.
I'd also like to know how can have saturated colors like in the second image and have it still muted, mine always have too much contrast.

I use Photoshop CS4, TIA.

Some people probably do it different, but I think colour balance and curves are useful to achieve the colours, then vibrance layers to make them stand out.

Gaussian Blur layers set on Overlay help as well :)

A hue/saturation layer on top of everything with the saturation bumped up at least +10 or +20 should help too.:)

For vibrant colours, the secret is Vibrance layers (only available in Photoshop CS4 and above) to boost the saturation of unsaturated colours and protects skintones from getting oversaturated.

Color Burn also does increase saturation to an extent. I use several grey layers (not too dark, around #BFBFBF) set on Color Burn and then Curves to lighten the areas darkened by Color Burn.
