Making .gifs on CS5 with video files?

Hi, I've been trying to create .gifs on Photoshop CS5, but I've had a few problems. For starters, when I click File>Import>Video Frames to Layers and try to find mpg4 files, they don't show up in the browse pop-up. I tried using an .avi file instead, and that can be found, but when I try to select the parts I want to cap it just comes up with a white box, and the frames are just blank white layers. I also tried capping my frames on the KM Player, uploading them to ImageReady and click Move to Photoshop, but it says it cannot move because Photoshop isn't responding, even though it's working fine? I usually use Photoshop CS2, but CS5 has vibrance layers that I wish to use. Any help would be lovely, thanks heaps in advance<3

For CS5 the videos need to be in .mp4 or .mov format to make the preview appear rather than white box. I'm preferred to convert my video to .mp4 first than import to CS5 like usual. :]

Oh and also, how do you convert your videos? Sorry to be a pain, I just don't want to have to re-download all my videos as I'm on a broadband gb limit >

I hope you don't mind me bothering you, but it seems like you might know. I'm trying to make gifs, too, and when I go to file>import>video frames, it says "Import Video Frames to Layers is not Available in the 64 bit version of Photoshop. Please use the 32 bit version instead." And I do not know what to do or anything similar. If you could help, I'd love you times a million.

Sorry I'm not really clear about your question but I tried answer it anyway. :]

After you import frames to PS you go to layer panel and right click the image that you want to coloring by choosing "blending options" and there are function there. You also can simply go to Image>Adjustments.

If you want it to take effect to all layers, in layer panel choose the top image that listed and then go to adjustment icon (half black & white circle) above masks icon that usually appear on right side panel as also layer, characters & swatches panel. :]

I know this thread is very old, but I'm looking for a bit of help. Since I started making gifs, I've been capping videos and uploading the frames, but I want to make better quality gifs, so I'm trying to make them by uploading videos.

I'm using CS5 for Mac. I upload the .mp4 video by going layer>video layers>new video layer from file. Now is there anyway of converting that to frames? And if not, how do I select just a small part of the video?

Thanks. :)

There is a easy way to do it. You just go to File>Import>Video Frames to Layers. Choose your video and then you can see "Range to Import" windows pop-up.

This is a very old thread, but it doesn't hurt to ask either way. What do you use to convert the video to mp4? I have most avi videos, and would love them in mp4 but it's hard trying to find a converter that doesn't ruin the quality of make the video itself smaller in size.

I usually use Xilisoft Video Converter or Handbrake. But when it comes to the quality, it's not really just about the software but also the hardware. The better video/graphic card you have the better video quality you can produce. The setting (in software) that you use also need to be right too.

since the the video frames to layers only shows quicktime movie formats, i usually just type in *.* and every file in the folder shows up. i use that to open .gif files.

Okay this is sooo frustrating! I had the same problem as the starter, so I tried to convert .avi files into .mov and .mpg, but they come up with a BLACK box. And when I tried to use .mp4, it said that the movie file could not be opened. What should I do?!

I have PC by the way.
