Saving psd files as animated gif files and keeping it under 40k

Hi! *g* I'm still new at making icons with photoshop and IR, but this is what I've done so far.

1. Made the two frames I wanted in PS
2. Jumped to IR
3. Tweened the first frame with the second frame and the second frame back to the first frame and set it the looping on "forever", so the two pictures will continue to swap back and forth, but with the fade effect.

This is where I've run into problems... I can't for the life of me figure out how to save this .psd file as an animated .gif! In IR it only lets me save things as .psd files. When I open the .psd file in PS and try to save it as a .gif, that works but the result is a static .gif file which is only the first frame. How do I save the whole animation as a .gif file?

Also, I get the feeling it's going to be way over LJ's 40k limit, as it's about 12 frames long! Am I animating it correctly? I get the feeling I'm doing all my animation wrong, since they always come up as huge files and I can only fit 4 frames per animation, while I'm sure I've seen others with lots more.

These are the two frames that I want to animate together with a fade effect:

Would anyone be able to help, please? :o) Very simple step by step instructions would be very much appreciated! *g*
