Question on capturing moving images from non-DVD sources

Hiya--hope this isn't inappropriate. I looked through the memories and have Googled like mad, but haven't yet found a good answer for this: how do you capture bits of animation from sources that aren't DVD-video? I.e. divx, Xvid--mostly stuff downloaded off the Web, that is, to make into animated .gifs? I use WinDVD 6 Platinum to capture mini-movies off DVDs, but sadly it doesn't work with other file types. And VirtualDub hates divx/Xvid files as well.

Please tell me if the only option really is to decode the video or just do a zillion individual frame caps? Because, GAH. Those take hours and hours, and I'd like to save the time for iconing:). I'd love to have a quick and fast method instead. I had to DVD a whole ep of Farscape just to get this short clip in my icon...

[ETA: Reinstalled VirtualDub, that seems to hav got rid of the glitches. Working now. Woo!]

Yet another masking tutorial...

This icon is a simple blend of two images using a layer mask and therefore can be done with any 2 images you want, provided they have some affinity with eachother. I chose a photograph taken by Viggo titled 'Intrusion' from his book, Coincidence of Memory as the base, and a photograph of Viggo taken from A Perfect Murder, cropped not only to size but more importantly, to be rid of Gwyneth Paltrow...

Going from this and this to in a few simple steps using CS2.

Is there a Photoshop equivalent to "dither" in PSP? If not, what exactly does "dither" mean & how can I do something sort of like it [I have PS CS.]? Thanks in advance for your help.

Problem with Text (PS CS)

I'm having problems with text size. When I add text with the text tool, the text comes out really tiny (i can't barely see it). I've tried selecting the highest text size possible (72 pt) but no change.

The only way I can adjust the size is by using the "Free Transform", but the quality of the text is not that good and frankly, I don't want to be doing that everytime I add text!

Has it happened before to anyone else? What is the problem?
