Torn photograph effect

Hi, I'm looking to make an icon looks like it's been torn in half. What I want is a little more complicated that just applying a brush like Image hosting by Photobucket or Image hosting by Photobucket both created by crumblingwalls. I want each half to look a litte skewed or off center. Does that make sense?

Any way any suggestions or tutorials that you might be aware of would be greatly appreciated. I use PSP8

can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial or a post that discusses how to get this effect?

I have been trying to recreate this FOREVER and have never been able to.
Then my husband gets the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and there's a whole layout of Heidi Klum
as a pinup girl and they ALL have this effect, and I almost cried.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!

edit:I use photoshop cs (also have 7.0) and am wanting info on the vintage-y look. Camel cigarettes also uses this technique in their ads.

I've searched all the text memories, but can't seem to find an answer to my question. I'm following a tutorial concerning tiny text, and the author says to use kerning but does not say where to find it. I've opened my text toolbar (or what I assume is my text toolbar) and found something that I believe is kerning, but it's unselectable.

I've gone back pretty far in the archives, but haven't found an answer to this question.

I was wondering how one can achieve the colouring in this photo--more specifically, the right portion of the photo. All the attempts I've tried have it coming out too fake-looking, or just wrong. I use Photoshop CS.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Help? Black borders?!

I went through the memories, and a couple weeks of entries (I swear I saw this just recently) But I couldn't find it. Anyways, my question:

I use PS 7 and everytime I crop an icon there is a 1px black border around it. I hate putting borders in every icon, and I find this very annoying. Is there anyway I can make it go away?

I'm aware the answer is prob. very easy, and in front of my but i'm fustrated! Please and Thank you to anyone that helps.

*I think this maybe is one question with no answer. Thank you to all who have tried to help! I will try to figure out whats going on. Thank you all very much!
*I fixed it! YAY! I unchecked somethng and it works! Thank you to all who helped!!

I've looked through the memories (and I'm going to kick myself if it's there and I missed it), but can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial for using curves in PSP? I've tried to translate the tuts for PS and it's just confusing. I'd really like a tutorial that isn't icon-specific (aka "Use these settings to get this green effect") - I'd appreciate one that is a general "How to use curves without losing your mind" and explains pretty well what they do and how to use them on a variety of icons. :P I hope that makes sense (if not, I blame it on the allergy meds). Thanks in advance. :)

Alternative to Pin Light/Lighten

I use a program similar to PSP and PS, but not quite (Corel Photo-Paint 12), and I don't have Lighten or Pin Light on my program. Are there any alternatives/equivalents to this, or any way to imitate this? Besides Screen :)

I have the basic Blending modes - Add, Subtract, Difference, Multiply, Exclusion, Screen, Soft Light and Overlay etc, but not those two...:(

Thanks in advance!
