Brush and smudge tools not working

I always like to figure these things out for myself, but this one has me stumped. I checked the memories, but I couldn't find something that specifically addresses the problem I'm having. I use PS7 and as I was making icons, my smudge tool and brush tool decided they no longer wanted to work. I didn't touch any of the settings, so I'm not sure what triggered it. The smudge tool simply doesn't smudge. Some of my brush tools work, but not the basic hard round and soft round that I really need. If I hold down the mouse button and drag the brush back and forth several times, I'll get the faintest of thin lines that look like scribble marks (even with a large brush setting), but that's the extent of it. The mode is set to Normal and the opacity and flow are both at 100%. I've tried restarting Photoshop and also restarting my computer, but nothing fixes it. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone =)
I was just making an icon using poloroid brushes, and I was just wondering about one thing. What I usually do is, once I have the base of my image, I put a new layer, fill it with white, then put the brush over it in black, and use the background eraser to get rid of the black and only have the white frame. Now, is there any 'ideal settings' I should be using with the background eraser to get it to work efficiently? Or should I just play around with them.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

(I use psp8)

Can someone explain to me how to get those dots in a squiggly line instead of just placing them one by one by yourself? Lol, is it a brush or something like that? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT: thanks everyone for the advice! I'm pretty sure i can do it now thanks to your help! yay for nice people! :P

Okay, I'm having a problem with Imageready trying to make an animated icon.

This is what it looks like when I'm working on the icon frame by frame, which is how it's supposed to look.

This is what it looks like when I select "Optimized". When I press play in optimized mode it's just black. I even tried to save it as a gif, and when I went to view it with IE it was just black like that.

If anyone can help me fix this problem I'll be so grateful! Thanks!
+ you got that look

a couple people requested these tuts not to long ago and instead of e-mailing all of them (since i forget their e-mails) i'm just going to post it here, and hope they find them! Now i always save my icons as a jpg and as a photoshop image (so i can see the layers and what they're set to) so i can re-create them. I'm sorry if this is similar to anyone elses tutorial, but i assure you that was not my goal (i just want to let this be argument FREE!) ^_^

PS CS2 tutorial

Hey, guys! This is my first tutorial, so go easy on me.

How to get from this to using PS CS2. It's probably translatable, but I wouldn't know. ^_^

Dial-up users, BEWARE. Picture heavy. Also, very long-at least in my opinion.

Two questions

I was wondering if anyone knows how to make a non-squared border in PS7.

1. Image hosting by Photobucket By daoming_su
2. Image hosting by PhotobucketBy superbeicons

Here's the best example of what I want to do
Image hosting by Photobucketby camatie

When I tried to erase part of the background it saved "transparent" (erase, merge visiable, save as PNG)but when I uploaded it it came out looking like this.

Other question, how do you get Japanese characters (kanji, hiragana, katakana) in Photoshop?

It would be greatly appreciated. I use Photoshop 6 and Image Ready.

brushes in psp8

hi i'm trying to load some brush packs in psp8, they are .abr but i think they must be for psp9 because i keep getting a 'these are a new version can't load' message, is there any way around it?

I normally just go for image packs but these brush packs have some really nice brushes so i thought it might be worth asking.
