Simple Icon Tutorial - PhotoImpact

A simple icon tutorial covering essential icon-making skills. Made in PhotoImpact 8, but I think it should translate into PS and PSP as well. =)

Lesson #1: Icon Basics

Today we're going to look at the basics of icon making with a simple yet sophisticated World Cup icon of the German loss against Italy yesterday. We'll be going from this to this:

Level: Written with labeled screencaps for a beginner unfamiliar with the software, with a few ideas for intermediate users.

Note: Some of this may seem a little redundant to people who are used to making icons (or at least to their program), but I think it's good if I start out with a rather long tut to base more advanced ones on later, so you'll know what I'm talking about then.

Feel free to friend me for more tutorials, as well as icons and brushes made like this one!

Next tutorial: incorporating textures into your graphics work (beginner/intermediate).

I'm sure that there have been other tuts for this before, but people have mentioned that the pictures weren't working. So I'm going to write one up real fast xD

pure_hatr3d had asked how to do this, so I'm answering this for her ^__^ (I would have finished it last night, but I had to go out to the movies xD)

Uses: Adobe Photoshop and Image Ready. Must have basic knowledge of Photoshop tools, and how to make an animation,

okay, yeah, that's that... hope it makes sense xD;

I've been wondering for so long how to achieve a simple effect like these, specifically the first two rows of the Scarlett icons. I've asked, and haven't gotten a reply. I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS or 7.

I have noticed alot of incredible tutorials here on coloring...however when ever i try them on various images they never work. Is it safe to assume that the only way you can achieve the results in tutorials is if your using the image they are? cause i just can't get coloring and layer fills to work like others do on the images i am using....

Whenever I add text to my icons, it becomes slightly transparent and takes on the colors of wherever it was added (when I move it, it keeps the background of where it was). I can't add a picture yet, as an example, but does anyone have an idea off the top of their head?

I've looked around, if I missed this, i'm very sorry!

Does anyone have and/or know of any tutorials for black and white images?
I realize that I can use many of the tutorials posted with B/W images and they look decent, but I was just curious if anyone knew/wrote any strictly for black and white images.

I keep coming across a lot of different black & white pictures that I really like, but I never know how to enhance them. :/

Thanks! :) (Again, sorry if I missed this somewhere)

I have an issue with PS7.
I was trying to re-size an image, and whenever I re-open photoshop (it's currently minimized), it sends me to the help page and won't let me get back to using the program. I've had this problem before, but I forget how to fix it.

Okay guys, my ps is annoying me like crazy. I've looked though the mems and not found any help.

It's been working fine then all of a sudden I simply go to add text to an image and it refuses to! Does it matter that the pictures i'm trying to work with are in paintshopro format? Even then, I converted them to ps and jpeg format and they still don't accept text :|

My ps is version 7.0

I used this brush (by laurasue) Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting. I can't seem to get rid of the white edges. It looks okay on a white background, but when you put it on a different color background, it shows up as white as you can see here Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting. When I pasted the image onto a transparent background, this is what happens: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

What do I do to fix it?

i feel incredibly stupid for asking again, but i've been experimenting for the last hour and i just can't get it, despite how simple it looks.
So, if you feel like helping out a rookie in need, how can i/ do you know a good tutorial to get this sort of colouring:

So simple yet so....pretty.

Thank you in advance!
