Black & white?

Hey guys, I was wondering if you had some ideas how to turn black & white pics into something real stunning? I want to use Collapse ) on a dark background. And for my taste it's just too boring... I want some color in it without ruining the black & white touch. I looked in the memories but I didn't find anything about black & white pics. Some help would be gladly appriciated. I'm using Photoshop Elements aka everything is possible.

I'm new to icon-making.

Hello,

I just started making icons, and have used some of the tutorials listed here to start me off, but I really need to hone down my skills.

This is an awesome community, and I am glad to have found you.

Is there a community that exclusively helps beginners with their trouble spots, and can make suggestions to help them fix their problems, since this seems to be a "how-to" rather than "here's all my icons - I need help!" community.

I have posted my 4 icons just to say thank you to those whose tutorials I've used, but I shan't do so again.

anti-conformity

I'm usually a pretty unique person, and the only reason I'll ever post here is if I have a technical icon-making problem. But today I come before you all to beg ask for some tutorials that do not involve bright orange skin, radioactive hair, red blobs from hell, or icons that my cat got a hold of. It's been so long since I've seen something as refreshing as this, that I've honestly forgotten any techniques that I used in icon making before the fads hit us so hard.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Here's some examples:

All I'm simply asking here is for techniques used to achieve some of this beautiful, nostalgic coloring. It's just amazing. So thanks in advance! :)

I have a quick question.. this has been really bugging me. I hope it's aloud!

How can you draw boxes or any other shape with the polygonal lasso tool, and the edges come out flat? :/ Like.. whenever I draw something, the edges are always faded in with the picture. I'll give an example:

This is very frustrating.. >.> Sometimes ordinary borders get boring and I want to do 'slanted' or 'crooked' ones, but they come out looking bad.

Any help would be greeeeaaatly appreciated. ♥

Lines in multiply layers while using PS7?

There probably is a simple answer to this, and I'm just blind, but I spent twenty minutes looking through the memories, and didn't find anything on this.

I'm using PS7, and sometimes when I try to set two layers on multiply, I get vertical lines through the icon.

Like so:

I thought it might've had something to do with the way I was saving, but when I tried saving as a .png, .gif, or .jpg, I got the same result. Help, please?

Pen Tool!!

Okay.
This pen tool thing is really making me mad.
I cant get it to work in PS7 OR my PSP9.

Alright.
My icons USED to look like this in PSP:
img192/7186/43xj6.png img131/1618/57vg9.png
They used to look really awesome.
Nice and soft looking.
And NOW!!!
they look like this:
img303/6969/112dv8.png img97/8140/114bx3.png
All ugly.
And pixelated. And just...hard and sharpen-y looking.
Ya know?

I must have effing messed up my Pen settings or something D;<
Can someone tell me how i COULD fix my settings or just tell me what they're settings are so I could fix mine?

AND!
My other question is, in friggin PS7, how come I cant get my friggin pen color to show up?
Like I will HAVE pink selected or something and then when I draw with the pen, it only shows up with some grayish color.
And then when I copy everything and paste it into PSP, the effing pen lines are gone. D:<
Ughh!!

Photoshop Elements 5.0 installation question

Hey everyone! The question I have tonight pertains to installation of a graphics program rather than icons themselves....hope this is ok. I just picked up Photoshop Elements 5.0 and I'm trying to install it on my laptop (which is a Sony Vaio by the way) and I keep getting an error that says it couldn't install there was no VGA resolution. I'm having trouble figuring out what the heck that is. I know it has something to do with my monitor display or something to that effect, I just can't figure out how to fix it or change it so that I can have this program on my laptop. Did I just get an old version of PS Elements, or is this something I can't install on a laptop? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT:

Fixed! Thank you aquamarcia!
