Merging images with PSP IX?

I'm trying to learn how to blend images using PSP XI. It isn't going well. I can't get the images I'm using to blend...they are both titled by PSP as being "background" images, and when I try to copy and paste the selection of the second image that I want to merge into the first, it won't blend.

I'm trying to get this type of effect:

Can anyone explain to me in really simple terms exactly what I need to do, step by step, to get the second image to not also be "background" so that I can merge it with the first?

I deeply apologise if this has been posted before...I did have a look through the memories but couldn't really follow anything I found.

PS - Making Text Brushes

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if there was a tut on how to make photoshop text brushes.  I saw the tutorial on How to Create, Save, and Share Brushes in the archive/memories, but it only talks about making brushes by using images.  I just want to know how to type out text, for example from a song, and save that as a brush set.

Any help would be much appreciated!  Thank you!

Animation in ImageReady

I'm hoping someone has a word or two of advice...

I'm having problems suddenly with creating animated icons. I open up an .mpg in ImageReady, like usual, click on Select Range and Every 2nd Frame. But even though I have under 30 frames of animation (sometimes under 20 - or even 15!) my icon saves at a ridiculously high file size. I had 27 frames in one icon and it saved at 125kb! Another icon has only 17 frames and it's file size is 50.0. What is the problem?

Scratch Textures

For the past few days I've been trying to make scratch textures, but they never seem to look right. I was wondering if you can give me some tips on how to make them. (I use Paint Shop Pro 9) Please and thank you! :)
