Photoshop Text Tool Help

Normally, I do all my text/textures in GIMP, and my coloring in Photoshop, but that's kinda weird, so I'm trying to switch to Photoshop completely. Anyway, I'm having a problem with the text tool. No matter what size I change it to (in the drop down menu), it doesn't change. All I get are these little dots, and I can't read the text. How do I get the text dialog box to come up? I'm just confused.

EDIT: Got the dialog box up. Still can't change a thing.
EDIT 2: Okay, I can FINALLY see the text when it's at like....400pt. Is this a resolution issue? And if so, how do I fix it?

EDIT 3: SOLVED! Thanks guys!

Photoshop CS2 (and 7, too :/) is being a bad boy and it won't let me select styles. I can load them, but not select them. When I try to select them my cursor only drags it around, as if I were trying to delete the style from the palette. I know styles are a bit old fashioned, but I'm actually trying to make purikura for a contest entry, and I can't use the damn styles! ><

Does anyone know how I can make them work?

(ps: they were working just fine five minutes ago)
