Effects for grayscale icons?

I have wonderful bases that are in black-and-white, and it is very hard to find tutorials for grayscale pictures. Can anyone steer me in the direction of some? I don't necessarily want to "color" them, as in coloring their hair and clothes and skin separately, but something to make the icon pop. Thank you so much! ♥

can someone point me to a tutorial in how to use curves?
you know, how it works, lightening.. i've seen a lot of tutorial that involves curves, and i like the result, but when i try to use it myself i don't know what the hell i'm doing! i really would like to learn, so i can improve my icon-making...

i use PS 7.0, if it matters...

Okay, I know it's a lot to ask; but could someone possibly tell me how to do the overlapping? Like, on Vanessa's arm you can see her body on it, then over in the top right corner she's there. How do you do that? Then, the textures. Whenever I use textures, they make the picture a completely different color, like it darkens it and what not. Help, what am I doing wrong?
i use cs3 im new at it so step by step please :]

Hi, I've found these wonderful banners and I'm deeply interested in this blend effect. Have you got any idea how I can merge the background with the picture like this? I've asked the maker but it was on an old post and I don't think she'll read it...

I'm using Photoshop CS2
