How do you do this effect? UPDATED

I don't have the original but I've seen it. It was a pretty standard daylight picture, no really bright coloring or too much light. I really want to know how to get the blue so blue, and the white is so clear, but also the darker edges around it seem so nice. It seems like a border of black actually. I know the photographer but haven't been able to get into contact with her to ask, I know she uses photoshop and I do also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Simplest icon ever

Okay, we're going to go from to in two steps. No lie.

Originally I was planning on following this tutorial by omg_its_olivia

I made my base from this picture and cropped it to where I liked it.

It's a bit dull so duplicated the layer and set it to screen 100%, brightening it up quite a bit.

This is where I started following the tutorial. I made the Selective Color layer and followed omg_its_olivia's settings for Red: -100, 100, 100, 100

I liked the effect that had on my icon, so I just...stopped there. And got the above icon.

A simple question, even though I'm apparently not smart enough to figure it out.
I've always wondered how to make a photo look like THIS in photoshop, but for some reason I can never make them look that good. It just looks professional, and I'm sure it's the easiest thing to do, but for some reason I can't get it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
