Lighting and sharping/saturation effects help?

I asked for help at coloring_help and tried asking the icon maker herself but have had no responce at all, so I turn here in desperation. I'm in love with the way these icons are lit and I was wondering how to get the effect? Is it just textures, or something else? Also, how does the icon maker manage to sharpen and saturate the icons the way she does while keeping them so pretty? I'm at a loss to that, too. I'm sure it's one of those things that will be painfully obvious when pointed out but I've tried playing around to get a similar effect myself and haven't come close, so any help would be really appreciated. I'm using Photoshop CS3. Example icons behind the cut.

oh, bother.

Well I just checked the memories and didn't find anything too useful for my problem, so I'm sorry if there is a post about this, I must not have seen it. But basically, my problem is this - I just opened up my PS7 5 minutes ago and started to work on changing image sizes on a few pictures. Nothing else. I then get to a picture, and it says "Could not complete your request because of a program error" ......what.

I have literally just saved 4 other pictures and I did nothing else to them but make the pixels smaller and switched them to .png from .jpeg. but... this picture won't even let me save it in .jpeg, it's default setting. I found this post and the first response would probably help because I've done that before... but if there's something really wrong then I don't wanna have to open up paint everytime.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
