Bringing Out the Colors

Program used: Photoshop Elements 5.0
Number of steps: Five to seven
Level of difficulty: Easy

1. Open this image or your own and crop it down to 100x100 pixels. (Be sure to sharpen your base if you need to.)

2. Go up to "Layer", scroll down to "New Adjustment Layer" and click on "Hue/Saturation..." in the sidebar that appears. Click "OK" and set the saturation to +3. Now set this (hue/saturation) layer to "Soft Light" at 100%.

3. Double-click the hue/saturation layer's thumbnail (which is located on the layer palette and looks like this). The hue/saturation option box will pop back up. Reset the saturation to +25 and set the lightness to +25.

4. Go up to "Layer", scroll down to "New Adjustment Layer" and this time click on "Brightness/Contrast..." in the sidebar. Click "OK" and set the brightness to +5 and the contrast to +10. (See the colors of the icon pop?)

*For those of you who would like to view the layer palette at this point, click here.*

5. If you choose not to add the transparent border, flatten the image (by right-clicking on any of the thumbnails in the layer palette and scrolling down to and clicking on "Flatten Image") and you're done!

6. These last two steps are optional. After you've flattened your image, duplicate your base. (Be sure to do this or else you won't be able to change the border's opacity level.) With your pencil tool set to 3 pixels in size and white (#FFFFFF), draw a line on the outside edges of the icon. I tend to zoom in when I do this, for accuracy purposes. (Click "Fit on Screen" under the "View" tab.)

7. Set the border layer's opacity to 25% and...you're done!
