Animated question

First, thanks to everyone who posts tutorials here; you guys are great and i don't feel like an icon noob anymore!

I have a question about animated icons and coloring and I didn't find the answer in the faq (fyi: I use photoshop, 7.0, Cs2 and Cs3...but mostly 7.0 out of habit; imageready for animation).

Does anyone know or know of a good tutorial on how to deal with coloring on animated icons? I'd like an all-around tutorial but my major issue is with adding color layers to a selected portion of the icon, rather than the entire canvas.

When I make them, if I want to change the coloring, i usually just add the selective color, hue/sat, etc. layers to the very top of all the layers. this is great because it affects each layer in the icon. The problem I have, though, is that this always affects the background i may be using for the icon itself. it can be a pain in the butt to try and erase, especially if i'm using a lot of coloring layers because i have to erase each one individually, make sure i erase it all, and try not to hit the border of the animated layers, etc. maybe there's an easier way and i just don't know about it. i tried using the select tool to add the coloring layers to, but it didn't work- it still affected the entire icon. any help would be appreciated!
