Small text issues

I'm hoping someone can help me solve this problem. I use GIMP 2.0, and whenever I try to do small text, it looks weird. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've posted a few examples under the cut, and I would be eternally greatful if someone could help me figure this out! Thank you!

Here's an icon I made in an attempt to use small text. Problem is, if I make it any smaller, it's unreadable in a way that doesn't even look like text, it just looks like pixels.

I've turned "antialiasing" off, like you're supposed to do with tiny text, but it still looks funny to me. These are the three fonts I've been using for small text at size 10. Are they supposed to look this pixel-y? They don't look that pixel-y when I see them used in other icons...

Anyway, if you can help me figure this out, then thank you!! I'm starting to get pretty darn frustrated here. :P
